Is telling a lie wrong?

Is telling a lie wrong?
18 May 2016

When someone asks you, if telling a lie is wrong, you are most likely embarrassed. The reason is because we tend to include a lie in most of our conversations. If a child asks this question to a father and if the father says, “Yes, it is wrong”, then the child is sure to ask, “Why then did you tell on the phone that you were driving when you were actually sitting at home?”. If the father said it is not wrong I’m sure you can imagine the consequences. This topic probably requires a lot of understanding.

Lie is a false statement that is made intentionally. Intentions will differ though. Lying is a co-operative act and most of the times it does not happen without more than one person involved in it. This is because the person who lies assumes that he knows something that the other person does not know. A student can lie about a home work to his teacher because he assumes that the teacher is not aware of what happened at home. Lies are not always harmful. Most often women lie to protect others. A mom speaking in support of her child is a classic example.

In this modern age, we tend to lie more than ever. In very olden days people may have had very less to talk about and did not lie much. However, these days’ people have a lot to talk about, a lot of information around that leads to a lot of lies. Most of us lie frequently but only a few make a big lie. If you thought for a second why you would lie frequently, take moment to look back on conversations you had in the last couple of hours. You probably told someone on that you had some work when you actually did not have any work but was just bored. You probably told your husband or wife they don’t look fat in the dress, when they asked you if they looked fat. You probably told your boss you are working on it while you were actually checking your personal emails. Although not applicable all the time, people tend to lie easily on email than on phone. LinkedIn profiles have more truth than resumes in any other formats.

Everyone lies. Deception is everywhere. Instead of trying to figure out if telling a lie is wrong…. or not, learn to be true to yourself which matters the most. If you are someone who hates lies, please understand that some time you may have to allow others to lie. Let not the definition of lie define your personality.
